In 2015, the British National Health Service made significant recommendations that women with low risk pregnancies are advised to birth out of a hospital setting. As a nonprofit that supports a freestanding birth center in Santa Rosa, we enthusiastically agree.
We believe that Thrive Birth Center, which is unique in that it is a Licensed Midwifery Birth Center staffed by midwives, practitioners and educators, is the future of maternity care, not only in California but the nation. Thrive offers safe, quality maternity care in a sanctuary like setting. Families who choose to birth at Thrive are diverse but their common thread is that they are well informed and looking for an experience that is safe and not within the hospital system. Thrive's statistics back up the UK's recommendations; Thrive families are indeed thriving and they have exceptional success at achieving low intervention births, vaginal birth after cesarean, and sustained breastfeeding relationships.
We formed Friends of Thrive because one problem remains. There is a gap between what birth costs and what many families can afford to pay for midwifery care. Through community outreach and fundraising, we raise money to provide grants to eligible families choosing to receive maternity care at Thrive Birth Center. In this way, we increase education about safe birth options, increase access to midwifery care and make it available to more families, and increase positive birth outcomes in underserved populations. Join us in helping make midwifery care accessible in Sonoma County!
“It is not only that we want to bring about an easy labor, without risking injury to the mother or the child; we must go further. We must understand that childbirth is fundamentally a spiritual, as well as a physical, achievement . . . The birth of a child is the ultimate perfection of human love.” – Dr. Grantly Dick-Read, 1953
